Dear Family and friends,
It
is hard to believe that we have been able to be in Trinidad for twelve
days in a row! We have been enjoying catching up a little...although it
will never be possible unless we can make time and emails stand still.
We have been able to teach with our missionaries and attend some
wonderful baptisms.
One
in particular, is that of the Modeste family. Nick Modeste is the
father of 8 children from the ages of 1-13. His family had first been
contacted ten years ago by missionaries. Last year two of our sisters
were teaching the family for about a month, but committing to return
visits, just didn't happen, so they dropped them.
About
two months ago, newly assigned sisters were looking in the area book of
previous investigators and found their family. When they visited, he
welcomed them and updated them on his family. His wife was expecting
their 8th child when she was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors
explained it was possible to save her, but she would need to terminate
her pregnancy. She refused to have cancer treatment. She delivered a
beautiful baby girl, began cancer treatment, but died within 3 months.
He has been a single father for the last ten months praying for help.
Two weeks ago, Nick was baptized and received the priesthood. This week
he baptized four of his children. It was a beautiful day for all of them
and such a gift for those who were there. What
a testimony of the plan of salvation and the eternal blessing of
families being together forever. The next day Dad and I went to the ward
for their confirmation. They looked radiant and were so happy to
receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Days like that make this mission worth every difficult day we have.
We
are getting ready to greet 1 new elder to the mission tonight and then 6
leave for home on Thursday morning. I have been busy cooking and trying
to keep track of all the mangoes that are falling from the trees
begging to become JAM. So, I have made 6 batches of mango jam and have
giving away bags of fresh mangoes to the neighborhood. I wish you were
here to share with. YUM!
It's hard to believe that summer is here...or there...since it is always summer here!
